z/OS MVS SMS FACILITIES

THE COURSE: SMS (Storage Management Subsystem) can have a significant impact on your z/OS MVS system, especially your JCL.  This one-day class focuses on the effect SMS has on the JCL user, explaining through detailed examples all the differences between SMS-managed and non-SMS-managed data sets and pointing out the various benefits and possible pitfalls.  The discussion includes: The effect DATACALS on creating multi-volume data sets, virtual tape, 'Extended Format' data sets, 'Space Constraint Relief' and PDSEs. Much of what the class covers, especially multivolume disk data sets and GDGs, is poorly documented.  The effect of SMS on VSAM is also discussed.
THE AUDIENCE: Indispensable for any technical (programmers, analysts, technical support specialists, operators, etc.) or managerial personnel who are using (even for a long time), or are planning to use SMS. Adequate knowledge of JCL is required.
THE FEE: $480 per student.

z/OS MVS SYNCSORT AND DFSORT

THE COURSE: This one-day class covers two similar sort/merge products, SYNCSORT and DFSORT.  First, the class discusses the JCL needed to sort or merge, with an analysis of the PARM options.  Then the sort/merge control statements, such as SORT, MERGE, INCLUDE, OMIT, INREC, OUTREC, OUTFIL etc., are discussed.  Using either product to perform efficient copying is included.  Performance considerations are given attention.  Several exercises are analyzed in class.
THE AUDIENCE: All technical personnel who wish to learn the many capabilities of the two sort/merge products.
THE FEE: $465 per student.

z/OS MVS ADVANCED SYNCSORT

THE COURSE: This one-day class begins with a review of the main SYNCSORT control statements (SORT. MERGE, INCLUDE, OMIT, INREC, SUM, ALTSEQ and the non-Report-Writing functions of OUTREC & OUTFIL).  Then it expands to and focuses on the REPORTWRITER, the Report-Writing functions of the OUTREC and OUTFIL control statements - editing data, dividing reports into sections, printing age/section/report headers and trailers with totals, subtotals and more.  Several exercises are analyzed in class.
THE AUDIENCE: All technical personnel who are familiar with the basic functions of SYNCSORT, and wish to learn the many report-writing facilities of the product's SORTWRITER.
THE FEE: $485 per student.

z/OS MVS JCL PROCEDURES

THE COURSE: This one-day class covers cataloged and in-stream procedures.  It discusses how to: execute them; override them; write them; properly use symbolic parameters; detect and correct errors; restart jobs with procedures, etc.  Emphasis is given to the use of proper practices and avoidance of pitfalls.  Nested procedures and the use of in-stream symbolic parameters are also discussed.  Several exercises are analyzed in class.
THE AUDIENCE: Programmers, analysts, technical support specialists and operators who wish to sharpen their skills of handling as well as writing procedures.  Adequate knowledge of JCL is required.
THE FEE: $440 per student.

z/OS MVS FUNDAMENTALS

THE COURSE: five-day class is intended for those that
have little or no knowledge of IBM mainframe fundamentals.
It begins with a discussion of MVS structure, design and fea-
tures. It follows with a TSO/ISPF tutorial, focusing mostly on
the Edit function, Utilities and SDSF. A JCL tutorial is the
next topic, followed by a discussion of the available Access
Methods and the basics of the IBM DB2 Data Base. Operatio-
nal considerations follow, explaining the function of an ope-
rator and the JES2 system. Online system CICS (Customer
Information Control System) is the next topic, and the class
concludes with a discussion of the RACF security system.
THE AUDIENCE: Mostly non-technical personnel whose job
responsibility, such as that of the members of an auditing
group, or non-technical managers of technical groups,
requires a certain amount of technical knowledge.
THE FEE: Offered in-house only - ask for our in-house fees.
